Chris Magnusson

About Our Guest Speaker
Chris Magnusson

Chris Magnusson served in the United States Marine Corps for six years as a Special Intelligence Communications Center Operator from 1984- 1991 and was a Sergeant (E-5) when she was honorably discharged.  During that time, she was stationed in Parris Island, South Carolina,; Company K Marine Support Battalion in Pensacola, Florida; 2nd Radio Battalion at Camp Lejeune, North  Carolina; and Company F Marine Support Battalion in Rota, Spain.

After her discharge she moved back to Hibbing, noticing that people reacted in an uncomfortable way to her status as a veteran.  In 2011, when the Beyond the Yellow Ribbon Committee was formed by the National Guard for the purpose of supporting local units deploying to the Middle East, Magnusson began to acknowledge her military experience.

For the past two years Magnusson has been a board member and Public Relations Coordinator for the Minnesota Women Veterans initiative.  As a member of the United Way of Northeastern Minnesota – United for Veterans committee, she serves in many capacities.  Magnusson is the leader of the Northeastern Minnesota Women Veterans group which has grown significantly since 2018.  Women veterans meet monthly in Hibbing and Virginia and participate in many local and regional events and projects.

Magnusson received the 2011 Hibbing Area Chamber of Commerce Above and Beyond award for her work establishing the Beyond the Yellow Ribbon-Hibbing/Chisholm Committee, a Certificate of Appreciation and Challenge Coin in 2018 from the Able Troop 1st Squadron 94th Cavalry Regiment, and she received the 2018 Lifesaver Award from the United Way of Northeastern Minnesota.

I Am Not Invisible - Women Veterans

I Am Not Invisible - Women Veterans

Nearly 29,000 women veterans call Minnesota home. These women have served in every era of service and every branch of America’s Armed Forces, offering extraordinary service and sacrifice to defend America at home and abroad. Unfortunately, they often feel overlooked when they come home. Their service and sacrifice often goes unrecognized, while our men in uniform are publicly honored and supported, our women veterans too often feel…. Invisible.

Ars Bellum Foundation joined the Minnesota VFW, Women Veterans Initiative, 23rd Veteran, and the Minnesota Department of Veterans Affairs to produce a very special public awareness campaign. The “I am Not Invisible” campaign celebrates the contributions of Minnesota women to our Armed Forces.

The campaign features a portrait exhibit of 33 Minnesota women veterans from all walks of life who have served our nation from WWII to Korea to Vietnam, through peace time and the current conflicts. “I Am Not Invisible” is an awareness campaign designed to honor that service and sacrifice; and give our communities an opportunity to show women veterans they are respected and supported.  That they are not invisible.
